The reason that dark night becomes bright day
Is due to the masked creature’s way
For twelve hours the sun will stay
Then night comes with its black and grey

For the bandit takes the prized hour of rest
Holds the coming of night and day on his chest
Created the sun, and took away the night
From eternal darkness, he gave us light

I’m about to tell you the scarcely known fable
Of the raccoon, to control day and night he was able
I’m about to recite the rarely told story
Of a creature of great strength and glory

There once was a raccoon who was as big as a boulder
Than you, my listener, he was much, much older
With streaky grey fur and a dark black mask
Blue eyes that told you he could do any task

Long before humans there was no day, just night
The raccoon was known through the land with most might
He had a big ego and he bragged quite a ton
He was reckless and daring, made coyotes run

At some point in time he got bored of the night
He thought to himself, I’ll make things right
He breathed in the night and didn’t let it go
In his stomach midnight he did stow

But he let a star soar off of his smooth tongue
And that giant star was very, very young
The raccoon told the star to go up to the sky
And above all that star would shine high

And that star became what we know as the sun
Yes, that well known star was the one
Around nine afternoon he lets the night out
To roam in the sky and frolic all about

But about four at morn he breathes it back in
And lets the sun shine with a fiery grin
And this cycle does repeat and continue
Dark black at night, at day bright blue

To this time day’s a reality
Thanks to the sun, so we can see
Thanks to the raccoon for daytime
Without it we’d practically be blind

The raccoon’s still alive to this very day
But most think he’s gone, faded away
Yet they’re wrong, he’s still roaming out there
When day becomes night he does declare:
